Flour Drum Newtown đŸȘ

A snippet from a FCBA x Flour Drum Event

Flour Drum Newtown is a gorgeous little rustic cafe and one of my absolute favs in Sydney; not just because of the amazing dishes and creations Johnny (creative genius & Head Chef, @themoonlightbaker) whips up in the kitchen but also for their genuine hospitality towards all the customers that visit.  Located at 531 King St, the three gents (Victor, Christopher & Johnny) combine their skills to run a casual hang out place that serves up exceptional food. It’s impossible not to fall in love with them!

You can’t help but be over fed here!

I’ve visited this venue more times than I can count; for pleasure, a catch up with the boys or to help them spread the word of their amazing place through collaborations with FCBA Community.  After all this time I’m still in love with their decor, it’s rustic, Australian, eclectic and they have a gorgeous outdoor courtyard with the cutest residents (think bunnies and quails!) and a garden that’s goes into full bloom during Spring and Summer!

With their constantly updating menu, it’s hard for me to review all the dishes I’ve had so far but let me tell you about some of my current favourites

BBQ duck dumplings
A favourite and a signature from one of their first Winter Menu’s, this dish has made a come back (thank god)!  The dumplings are a hybrid of Chinese Wontons and Italian Ravioli served with egg noodles and Bok Choy in a duck broth infused with spices.  Add a generous portion of their homemade chilli jam and there’s nothing I can fault.  What makes this dish so special is not only the broth but the filling within the dumplings.  Made with BBQ duck, the filling has the smooth texture found within a ravioli but the flavours in tune with the dish’s Asian influence.

Not even lying, this is a must order every time I visit!

House-made Pappardelle and 8 hr slow cooked lamb
Another favourite of mine that also made its first appearance during their first Winter Menu launch, is now also a permanent signature item and a must order every time I visit. The house-made Pappardelle is silky smooth and wide, giving the thick sauce plenty of area to cling itself to. The slow cooked lamb is shredded and just melts in your mouth!  The best part of the dish is the small hint of heat from the Asian-style shallot and chilli infused oil in the rich lamb ragu which comes through in every mouthful, and gives your tastebuds the perfect little tingle.

Gorgeous and delicious!

Banoffee Pancake stack
Their newest pancake stack is the Banoffee Pancakes. They’re a must if you’re craving something sweet and moreish! Served covered in toasted Anzac cookie crumbs and a large toffee disc, meringues, dulce de leche, mascarpone, fresh fruit and grilled caramelised banana still in the skin to retain all its moisture and a shot of maple syrup to pour over. If that doesn’t sound over the top I don’t know what is! While it all sounds very sweet, in reality the dish was perfectly balanced with the thick pancakes.  What I found amazing is that even after pouring all the maple syrup over the pancakes, each mouthful was still fluffy and light, making the pancakes the perfect mop to soak up all the sauces and syrup on the plate!

Their desserts!
What sets Flour Drum apart from a lot of cafes around in Sydney, is their creative flair and passion for sweets and desserts.  The best days are when I walk into Flour Drum and see their shop window and fridges chock full of their delicious cookies, friands, cakes, puddings, biscuits, rocky roads and much more! You wouldn’t believe all the baked goods are made daily and in house, but trust me when I say, Johnny is a energiser bunny in the kitchen!

Creme Brûlée, Blackforest & Red Velvet.  Just some of the amazing flavours available!

Lamingtons and cakes
What put Flour Drum on the radar years ago, and still now, is their creative takes on the good old Aussie lamingtons.  With flavours ranging from Creme BrĂ»lĂ©e, Peanut butter and Jelly, Matcha, Black Forest and Red Velvet; this list is forever growing and I’m so glad it is! The sponge is always moist and the lamingtons are always sky tall!

White Chocolate Rocky Road, Winter Pavlova Cake & Milo Cookie Dough Cheesecake

Their cakes are so creative and when I’m too full to share a slice after brunch, I love filling up a box with goodies to enjoy at home until the next time I can head back and replenish my supplies.

Cookies
Their cookies are the newest additions to their viral fame and they’re not just delicious but they’re bigger than your head! Hells yes!

They’re staple flavours are the classic dark chocolate chip, the ‘smarty pants’ (it’s covered in M&Ms!), White Chocolate & malt and a Double Expresso & Chocolate Brownie but I know Johnny’s got some tricks up his sleeve on new flavours. Their cookies are crumbly, soft and buttery and packed full of ingredients; don’t believe that you can just take a bite and take your time enjoying these coz they’re seriously addictive and I can smash one by myself in 10 minutes!

What I love the most about this cafe is that they aren’t scared to be crazy and inventive in the kitchen.  They are always looking at how to continuously improve on their dishes and always open to chat with customers to draw inspiration and receive feedback graciously.  I love their passion and I’m so happy that they’re now open for dinner as well! They go from strength to strength and I can’t wait to see how this new chapter will unfold for them!
